Of Mr. X and 'Bye Bye Birdie' and Feherty
Heard a great little Miller Barber story yesterday on the day of his passing. Here's a mildly cleaned up version.
The story starts on a shuttle bus at some California tournament.
David Feherty gets on the shuttle and shares the ride with a prominent tour caddie. The ever irreverent Feherty asks the caddie who his golfing idols were growing up. It elicits the typical response of subjects: Nicklaus, Palmer, etc.
"Mine was Miller Barber," Feherty says. "Because in his prime, he spent the night with Ann-Margaret."
Then Feherty nudges the shuttle driver with his elbow and said, "Isn't that right, Miller?"
Barber -- who won 11 times on the PGA Tour and 24 more times on the Senior circuit -- took a hand from the wheel and gave a thumbs up.
Rest in peace, Mr. X.
