Educated Guesses Week 9: After the fall
Well that hurt ... but probably not as much as it did for the teams who lost the games.
Week 8 was a disastrous one for a lot of highly regarded football teams. Six of the top 10 in the coaches’ poll went down. The BCS picture became a lot clearer with Alabama, Oregon, Florida State and Ohio State surviving or thriving while Baylor and Miami lurk as unbeatens waiting for more upsets.
The carnage in our once so promising little corner of the collegiate universe was complete. Formerly No. 3 Clemson had its championship hopes utterly crushed by Florida State. The Seminoles and freshman quarterback Famous Jameis Winston laid waste to the Tigers 51-14 in a result that wasn’t as close as the final score indicates.
And that’s the game I got right.
Georgia and South Carolina pretty much ceded the SEC East to Missouri by letting leads slip away in two different quarters of Tennessee. Despite the absurd and costly targeting calls that helped turn the game around, the Bulldogs have no excuse for losing to Vandy. And the Gamecocks choked it up against the Vols.
Oh well, with football season essentially over around here as all the championships that once were within reach are now gone (or longshots at best), it’s a good time to head to Australia and start preparing for the Masters.
Educated guesses will be going through the motions the next few weeks.
