Educated Guesses Week 11: The Tide turns?

GOLD COAST, Australia – Maybe it’s the hole in the ozone layer down here, but my clarity of focus was almost spot on.

Not only did I get all of our big four games correct (some weren’t that hard), but I very nearly nailed three of the scores. So close in Georgia-Florida (24-20 instead of 23-20), S.C.-Mississippi State (34-17 instead of 34-16) and Clemson-Virginia (49-10 instead of 59-10). That’ll get me about as much as being a few digits off in Powerball, I suppose.

If only I had taken my clarity to the sports book down here on the day Australia stops to watch a horse race. Almost everyone got Tuesday off to watch the Melbourne Cup, a 2-mile turf race that features the best endurance horses (some year after year). Trying to get in the mood, we scoured the 24-horse field to predict winners. Longshot Red Cadeaux immediately captured my fancy with the similarity of our surnames. So pairing that with race favorite Fiorente seemed like the perfect exacta choice.

But we got confused trying to find a place to place a bet (turns out most sports bars would have been fine) and I never got a few dollars in the game. Naturally, Fiorente and Red Cadeaux finished 1-2 and paid off 430-to-1.

Onto Week 11, where I hear Nick Saban confirming his allegiance to Alabama, which means that Texas will be getting his services soon based on his word in the past. Maybe the Tide can then reach out to the Dolphins again for a replacement and bring in Richie Incognito.
